Why Are Organic Eggs Better?

At Buffalo Market, we believe in healthy food. We believe in better. We’re working hard alongside local farmers and producers to bring you the freshest, tastiest food we can, and where possible, this also means organic. It’s well known that, as a general rule, organic is better for both your body and the environment, but some organic produce is so markedly healthier that there’s really no reason to continue to buy the intensively farmed, mass produced version. Eggs are a good example.

The difference between factory farmed and free-range, organic chicken is stark. So it is with the eggs they produce. As well as receiving organic feed, and not being raised in cages, with organic eggs you know that the hens’ feed did not contain any synthetic fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides, growth hormones, animal byproducts, or any other toxic pollutant. It’s also unlikely they were given antibiotics.

Recent studies have shown that organic eggs contain more macronutrients than regular eggs, and can have up to three times the amount of omega-3 fatty acids. The eggs also contained twice as much vitamin E, and 40% more vitamin A.

There’s also a tendency for organic eggs to contain higher levels of antioxidants, in particular lutein and zeaxanthin, two compounds that are essential to the health of your eyes. They are found in the yolk, and the greater the concentration of these antioxidants, the deeper the yellow of the yolk, something organic eggs are known for.

But organic isn’t the only consideration to bear in mind when it comes to eggs. Happier hens = healthier eggs, so there are several other classifications you should look out for. Free-range (sometimes free-roaming) means the chickens either live outdoors or have outdoor access. This is beneficial in two ways. Chickens that can forage for plants and insects are healthier, and produce better quality eggs. And eggs from chickens that spend more time in the sun can contain up to six times more vitamin D than regular eggs.

But if you’re after the very best, look out for AWA – Animal Welfare Approved. They only certify family farms, and apply the strictest criteria for hens’ to roam free, eat naturally, and live in their natural state. The label combines organic with humane living conditions and handling – guaranteeing the consumer the best quality product.

And the best way to enjoy them? Studies have shown that the healthiest way to cook eggs is to simply boil them (poaching is also great too). We’ve got a great range of organic, free range, and heritage eggs, and are constantly on the lookout for more great producers. Why not stick some in your cart today, and see for yourself.
