Clever Uses For Bananas (Besides Eating Them)

We love bananas! And for good reason. They’re one of the healthiest and most nutritional fruits, and one of the most versatile too – there’s so many different ways to add them to your diet. But eating them is just one of the things you can do, for bananas can be used around the house for a number of different tasks. Intrigued? Read on!

Stick Them On Your Face

For an all-natural face mask that leaves your skin feeling soft and fresh, bananas are hard to beat. Mash up a ripe banana to a smooth paste, gently rub into your face and neck, leave for 20 min and then wash off. It’s that simple! For extra pampering, you could add ¼ cup of yogurt and two tablespoons of honey – it will leave you smelling devine!

First Aid

Banana peels have anti-inflammatory properties, which mean they can come in useful when you don’t have a first aid kit to hand. Poison ivy, sunburn, friction burns, and bug bites can all be soothed by compressing fresh banana peel around the affected area (you can tape it in position for extended relief – just don’t leave it on too long).

Polish That Silver

Forget that expensive, chemical laden silver polish they sell in the store. Just rub the inside of a banana peel all over the silver, wait a few minutes, then buff it up using a super soft cloth. Voila! This trick also works on leather shoes (yes, really).

Give Your Houseplants Some Love

Similar to above, that banana peel can also add a lustrous shine to your houseplant’s leaves. This will also remove dirt, dust, and any other gunk that’s built up on the leaves, leaving the shiny and healthy.

Restore Dry Hair

If you suffer from dry, frizzy, or brittle hair, bananas offer a cheap, quick fix to give your locks such much loved moisture and TLC. Just mash up a couple of ripe bananas, and massage through your hair all the way to the tip. Leave it in for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse in the shower and shampoo as normal. The result? Silky, tangle free hair!

Ripen An Avocado

Why is it so hard to find an avocado that’s just right? Either they’re turning to mush in your hand, or rock hard and green. But the humble banana can help! Bananas release ethylene, which speeds up the ripening process in a number of fruits, including avocado. Just wrap a banana and an avocado tightly in a brown paper bag, and wait – it’ll ripen it up in nearly double the time.

Stop CDs From Skipping

OK, I know what you’re thinking. What’s a CD? And yes, while most of us simply stream music from one device to cordless headphones these days, CDs still exist and provide a far richer listening experience (just ask your parents, ok?). If you have one that’s slightly scratched, or skipping, just rub in the inside of a banana peel over the offending area, wipe off any residue with a soft class, then shine it with some glass cleaner. The skip will have disappeared.

Remove Warts

Nobody likes warts. Nobody wants one. But if you are unlucky enough to get one, bananas can help. Cut a piece of ripe banana peel, tape it over the wart using medical tape, and leave overnight. By morning, the wart should have shrunk. This process can be repeated nightly too, and should result in the wart (eventually) disappearing.
