How To Include More Yogurt In Your Diet

ogurt is a great food – perfect for breakfast, a quick and easy dessert, or just as a snack. It’s healthy and nutritious too, and even suitable for people following a ketogenic diet. But there are so many more ways to enjoy yogurt than simply putting some in a bowl and adding some fruit or other toppings.

For a reduced fat alternative, try swapping mayonnaise for plain yogurt in chicken, tuna, or potato salads. It’s a nutrient rich substitute that’s healthier, without having to sacrifice taste. You can also whip up some Greek yogurt dressing to pour over simple salads or grilled chicken, or even use as a dip for sliced carrot, pepper, and celery.

Yogurt is a great way to thicken and add flavour to soups and stews. For anything that calls for cream, use a few cups of plain, unsweetened yogurt – this is also a useful trick for “cooling” down super spicy sauces and curries. Add a little to tomato passata for a wonderfully creamy pasta sauce, and it will even enrich pesto or a simple carbonara.

Love to bake? For any recipe that calls for oil or clarified butter, swap it out for Greek yogurt for some deliciously moist goodies. This also has the benefit of reducing fat and adding calcium. Muffins, carrot and lemon cake, and all types of sponge cakes can be made this way; even homemade nut and granola bars work (add just half a cup).

For another healthy upgrade, swap plain or Greek yogurt anytime you’d use sour cream – as a topping for tacos or spread on tortillas, dolloped on chilli con carne, or even on top of a baked potato. In a similar fashion, a thin spread of yogurt can replace butter or margarine of crackers, breads, and rolls, giving a healthier, creamier taste to sandwiches and simple snacks.

Smoothies are an obvious candidate for adding extra yogurt to your diet, and are much healthier than milkshakes. But this isn’t the only blended drink that benefit from its addition. Lassi’s work great with yogurt, as do cocktails if you’re up for some experimentation. Sweet alcohol like rum works great, as do flavours like mint, vanilla, berry, and citrus fruits.
